Today in the Little Studio, my students worked on sand paintings. We discussed the use of this medium in the Native American culture. I also talked about how Native American writing is made up of pictures that tell a story. My students were able to use these shapes and symbols to create their own art work.

Today in the little studio, my students discovered the work of Matisse. We talked about how Matisse, toward the end of his career, began to create cutouts, a new type of medium. Many of the cutouts resemble organic shapes found in nature. Children respond well to these images, such as flowers, waves, fish, seaweed and leaves. They then began to “draw”, just like Matisse did, with scissors and create their own cut paper collages. We ended our lesson with a lovely children’s book on the master himself, called “Henri’s Scissors” by Jeanette Winter.
